tv studio production
Today we had a lecture on how to work round the studio using the camera equipment and being in the gallery. I found this quite interesting but some camera work confusing and felt it was difficult to ask for help while listening to the lecturer and also making sure your listening to people in the gallery and remembering what you had to do with the camera. It felt like to much was going on at once and was difficult to take in. hopefully this will uncomplicate with time as this equipment is very interesting to learn.
Thursday
Applied media research
I'm very interested in this module as we are going to be answering industry set questions and researching into how media platforms are connecting and developing. In this lecture we were given our first assignment, as a group that we would be put in at a later date we are to create an online presentation answering a question given by a media company. Using qualitative and quantitative data and presenting it in an engaging manor using video, sound, text. etc.
In this module we also have to carry on with our blogs and we also got our marks and feedback from our last year blogs.
I got a 2.2 for my blog, i was happy with this as this is what i was expecting and it was the first blog i had ever wrote, so i wasn't expecting miracles. i feel its quite difficult to write in detail to 'no one' in a way and tell your feelings/thoughts to the internet. Sarah commented saying that my blog had quite a few short posts that reflected my Twitter Vernacular, i agree with this as i use twitter alot. my goal for this years blog is to write in more detail and explain why i did things and why i felt that way as i tend to avoid this as i feel its awkward.
Wednesday
Telivision studio Production
Today we had our first lecture in the TV Studio, I'm quite interested in this module however i do feel everyone else is a lot more excited about this than i am. A lot of people in the course seem to want to go into TV production and i don't. Far from it, I'm definitely more interested in research modules of MPS rather than production modules. It will be interesting to learn all this new technology but i have a feeling this module will alot of hard work, and many people dont realise this
We got shown round the 1.1 million industry standard studio and then moved on to a lecture room to be given our brief and to be put into groups.
We were sorted into groups my group includes: Sophie, Lois, Sam and Coral. Im excited to be working with these guys as i haven't before.
We then learnt about the different roles we would have to take on within our group:
Producer
Director
Floor Manager
Set Designer
Presenter
I really wanted to be set designer as i had a massive background in textiles and set designing from college but that positioned was snapped up quickly and so was every other! no one in the group wanted to be the presented so i volunteered myself for that! even though I'm not the most confident person in the world i thought id try to come out my comfort zone and help out the team

Monday
Beyond The Camera
After the morning lecture we began this lecture with Ian and Mark. In this module we will be using After Effects to create still and moving images while using special effects. I'm interested in learning to use After Effects as i do feel my weak point within university is using software like this, if i can master this i hope to learn a new skill.
Our first assignment was set, we have to create a single frame composite using photoshop. I was a bit worried about this as i know from previously doing a level photography and some work last year photoshop isn't my strongest point as it takes me a long time to get back into it and by the time I've worked it all out again its normally too late! Ian did say this was to refresh memories but i do feel i need more of a refresher. We also had to start thinking of ideas for our project to discuss in the next lecture.
....Ive survived my first day, i deserve a nandos

First Day
Today was our first lectures, it began with an overpriced Starbucks and long presentation from Kieth. I thought i had missed being at university....
Digital Media Cultures - What is digital Culture?
This lecture started with Marshall Mcleun, who i knew about due to doing research about him last year and the medium is the message.
Communication systems have always been central to the way in which a society is organised and controlled
In relation to communication networks we are interested in: who says what? (control of content) to whom? (the audience) how? (through what channel) when and where? (context) to what effect? (consequences)
Is it developments in media and communication that change culture? Or is it changes in culture that alter our ways of communicating
‘Democracies are sustained by and through the ability to of well funded
and resourced media organizations to analyze, and hold important institutions, such as our parliaments, courts, government agencies and their officials,
and politicians at all levels to account’
Mark Poster (1995) – argued that the main differences between old and new media was one of passivity as opposed to activity

and politicians at all levels to account’
Mark Poster (1995) – argued that the main differences between old and new media was one of passivity as opposed to activity
- -For Poster, old broadcast media was associated with the concept of the modern nation state – a ruling elite (often privileged through their wealth and education) acted as a small elite group of producers, who were able to shape public opinion by controlling the public sphere of broadcasting
-
-Messages were sent in a one way system of communication – the few to the
many
-
-However the digital or the “internet model” allows an interactive mode of
communication, whereby distinctions between consumer and producer are
collapsed – for Poster this “active” rather than “passive” subject will
produce a more critical subject
-‘The shift to decentralised networks of communications makes the producers consumers, senders receivers, upsetting the logic of the
first media age.’ Poster, M (1995:59) in The Second Media Age
Dilemas and Contradictions
How do we define the public sphere?
-
-Is the media a part of this or is it part of the private domain?
-How do we conceptualise choice within the media? -
-What are the implications of information being seen
as a commodity?
-Should the media inform and educate or be there to entertain?
-
-Is the media a part of this or is it part of the private domain?
Sunday
Hello 2nd Year
Tomorrow I'm back to university and very much looking forward to it after a summer of working hard at my part time job. I'm very excited to be in the new building as its close to my flat (literally 5 min walk!) and close to town! Its also exciting to be in a brand new building, with brand new equipment, and a brand new studio! On Thursday there was an induction to the course and the new building but i unfortunately couldn't attend due to committing to work already on that day so I'm going to have to wait and see on Monday when official lectures start.
We got told last year that our blog would be carrying on throughout our university course and hopefully keep going so i thought id write a post now before we go back.
Roll on Monday..
